Myself and my bf are going interrailing in August and propose this itinerary. We will only be going for 2 weeks, or slightly over if returning coicides with a weekend.

Madrid – Barcelona – Marseille (1 day) - Milan & Lake Como – Florence – Venice – Iizola (ferry from Venice) - Lake Bled - Croatia Split/Bratislava

I want to know if this itinerary is do-able and would like advice on any of the legs of the journey as to whether they would be viable. have we planned too much or is this ok?
i also wanted to do Athens but it seems that this will be difficult to get to in our small time frame. Similarly I am in two minds about Split & Bratislava as it seems difficult to get to. :((

Also we're not particularly bothered about south France either however we figured we might as well visit Marseilles on the way to Milan to break the journey up.

We obviously want to get value for money out of our rail pass but I am also concerned that I don't want our holiday to be memories of inside a train carriage!

any advice is greatly received. :D

Hi!

I think that your plans are probably a little bit too much for 2 weeks. I'd recommend to stay 2/3 days in the bigger cities - so you dont have to rush through, can relax one and go out the next day.. :)

I suppose you are flying to Madrid and going back by plane as well? If so, that will save you some days of your ticket since you can spend some time in Madrid and activate your IR ticket the day you leave for Barcelona. Same thing when you fly back - you arrive in the last city the day your ticket expires, can stay some days there and then go back home.

Since you are on a quite tight schedule I'd say skip Marseille and take the direct night train from Barcelona to Milano: https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-milan I know it's an expensive train but if you'd go during the day you'd sit the whole day in three trains (and would also need to pay supplements in all of them) and if you'd make a stop somewhere in between you'd need the money for the hostel.

I'd also go to Bratislava only if you'd get a cheap flight back home from there.

Thanks for the response. I will be flying to Madrid & home from our final destination but that is yet to be decided!

How would you change my intial route for 2 weeks? I am currently trying to work out the ferries from Barcelona over to Italy and from Italy to Slovenia/Croatia but it's quite tricky to work out. Do you know ways to do this?

Many thanks

Hi.

Some helpful links concerning the ferries:
There is a ferry connection Barcelona-Civitavecchia (which is very close to Rome) by Grimaldi Ferries. You should get a discount of 20% for students.
But check their website would be the best.

Italy-Croatia:
