Hi Everybody

I'm in Lisbon Portugal visiting my parents and would like to travel by train to visit my Wife and Son In Vienna Austria. They'll be there March 30 10 through April 2 10. I've been trying to get info for the last couple days but I just more confused.
I'm hoping to get route info and details. it does have to be the quickest way, time is on my side.

Hi!

Of course, quickest way would be by plane...but I cant help you out with that kind of info, sorry. What I can do is to give you the best train route, which in any way will require two nights in trains. Here we go:

Fastest connection

Lisboa SA 1630 - 0710 Hendaye
Hendaye 0748 - 1345 Paris Montparnasse
Paris Est 1524 - 1904 Stuttgart
Stuttgart 2012 - 2233 München
München 2340 - 0558 Wien Meidling :!: not the terminus

If 6am is too early, you can catch a night train from Frankfurt/Main as well, arriving in Wien West at 0904 - check the online schedule planner for details: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Do you plan on going back by train as well? Cheapest option with InterRail would be a 5in10 global pass for 159€/249€ (depending on your age) plus supplements...I'd estimate the costs for supplements (6 bed couchettes on night trains) at around 80€ (~35€ if you get seat reservations on night trains as well).
Hope that helps for now - if you have further questions please ask. :)

Thanks for the quick reply!!!! :D

I meant to say that I don't need the quickest way, but it will work as well. Yes I will be returning to Lisbon by train and I would like to go to Amsterdam on the way to Lisbon.

With that said, I would like to stay at each stop a little longer to do some sight seeing and picture taking.

Thanks
Alfredo

OK...you can make this trip with the 5in10 still...you only have to be careful with travel days and the validity period of your ticket. What you could do:

Leave Lisbon with Surex (timings in my before post) on the first day of validity of your IR ticket - you will then get a 50& discount for the CP ticket up to the border at Vilar Formoso (domestic travel isn't included in InterRail). From Vilar Formoso you will start you journey with InterRail ticket (you remain on the same train!) by making use of the https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train 1900-rule. That means that you dont need to mark this day (day1) as a travel day, only the following day. Day 2 you arrive in Hendaye with Surex, and go Paris - Stuttgart - Munich (as described yesterday). In Munich you take the night train to Wien and arrive in Wien the morning of day 3. So up to now you have used two of your five travel days. :)
To continue to Amsterdam I suggest taking a night train to save time since you are on a quite tight schedule - it would be possible during the day though. If you go by night train, you make use of the 1900-rule again, so that your journey Wien - Amsterdam counts as only one travel day. Travel days used: 3 :)
On your way back, you have to leave Amsterdam early for Paris and change there to the TGV to Irun (4th travel day) - in Irun you take the Surex again and go back to Lisboa (5th travel day). Again, you will get a 50% discount for Vilar Formoso - Lisboa. :)

If you want to spend more time, there'd be the 10in22 InterRail pass as well. Like I mentioned before, you will need to pay some additional supplements on the following trains:
Surex
TGV
night train Wien - Köln (on your way to Amsterdam)
Thalys (Amsterdam - Paris) - you can get by Thalys if you get up early enough and use regular IC trains to Lille and change to TGV to Paris there
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

And if you want to support the work here at the website and the forum, please buy your official InterRail ticket at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] . Thank you. :)

Hi Flow

I really appreciate all your help, but I'm really confused.

I understand that I have to purchase CP ticket at the train station to get to Villar Formoso
(It is now possible to get your tickets through the Internet. The possibility is available for the Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. To make a ticket purchase, you have to be registered in myCP and have a MBnet card or recognised credir card.)

I can't seem to navigate ( [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] ) to purchase the rest of the tickets/passes.

Living in the USA for the last 37 years I've become really spoiled by driving everywhere but I really wanna do this :| and I would rather purchase my Passes at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
