Hi,
I live in Nice, France and need to go to Warsaw, Poland mid-june. I have looked at buying a normal train ticket (not interrail) and it is about 200€ going through Paris and Cologne.
I thought of buying a '5 days within 10 days' and go through Italy/Switzerland/Austria/Germany/Czech Republic
Could you recommend any routes to me?
Thank you,
Roman
PS: I'd like to keep the trip quite cheap

Hi!
Since InterRail isnt valid in your country of residence, you would need to go via Ventimiglia for sure. There is a quite nice connection via Switzerland and Germany, but it would require some supplements - moreover there are a couple of tight connections...this would be the connection:
Nice Ville 0753 - 0842 Ventimiglia
Ventimiglia 0858 - 1255 Milano :arr: 3€ reservation not neccessary, but recommended (as reservation is compulsory for regular tickets and reserved seats are not indicated - so you might be asked to give up your seat since somebody else has got a reservation for it)
Milano 1310 - 1651 Zürich :arr: compulsory reservation, ~ 3 or 5€
Zürich 1702 - 1855 Freiburg
Freiburg 1904 - 1024 Warszawa :arr: compulsory reservation, check here for details of this night train: https://rail.cc/en/basel-warsaw-night-train/f2161
There'd be another connection available too, where you would need only the reservation for Milano - Zürich (3/5€) and the reservation for the night train to Berlin (cheapest is 10€ for a sleeperette).
So that would be ~200€ alltogether as well...think about it. The problem is that you will have to pay supplement if you go via Gotthard (Milano - Zürich) as well as via Pontebbana (Milano - Wien night train) and that you dont make it in a day for the München - Warszawa night train. IMO the proposed route is the shortest and cheapest.

If you're flexible with timetable, you'll get there with promo fares.
Advance ticket from any point in Germany to Warzsawa costs 39 euros (non-exchangable, nonrefundable). There shouldn't be a problem booking it well in advance. The starting point for this ticket should probably be Kehl, it's across the river from Strasbourg. To get to Strasbourg, some promo fare of SNCF should be found - my quick search on god awful SNCF website gave 47 euros fare for Lunea night train, but maybe you can find something else - if you're from France, you probably know better that SNCF stuff.
47 + 39 = 86 euros one way.
P.S. InterRail is of course better if you want to see some places along the route or take 1-2 more trips within the pass validity period.

Well, the Lunéa arrives at Strasbourg at 0944, then you would need to pay to get to Kehl and moreover you wouldnt get to Warszawa within a day...and the 39€ fare isnt valid on night trains.

Another option is going from Basel Bad wirh a night train to Berlin, and then with BWE to Warszawa. It's 49 euros in seat and 59 in couchette (advance nonrefundable fare).
Before that some French fare should be found from Nice to Basel SNCF.
And crossing with train or tram or bus from Basel SNCF to Basel Bad is quick and cheap ) as well as crossing from Strasbourg to Kehl, I suppose.

You know that the Lunéa is not running daily and arrival time varies in Strasbourg?

I started my first post in this topic with if your timetable is flexible or something like that )
Since no date is specified, I just took random distant date.
If on some particular day this very timetable isn't availible, there will be other options. The main one is night train from Basel Bad described in my previous post (or the same train from Offenburg, if going via Strasbourg is more convinient).

Of course this is a valiable argument and you certainly pointed out an interesting route - anyway, for me this is still a forum dedicated to traveling with InterRail ticket. So I still recommend going via Switzerland, and enjoying the alpine views on the way from Milano to Zürich. :)

Yes... it's an InterRail forum . Not a forum for general rail travel.
People often mix it as they don't get good answers of the rail companies. But we want to keep it InterRail here. :)
Even the solution of Head is okay for Non-InterRail travelers.

Thanks for your first reply.
What else shall I see on my way to Warsaw?
I was thinking of stopping at Auschwitz - is it convenient to get there by train on my way to Warsaw?
Cheers,

Umm...well, Auschwitz is probably to far away from Warszawa for a day trip. It is closer to Krakow though, and since Krakow is a pretty nice city anyway you could maybe stop there for like 2-3 days and visit both Auschwitz and Krakow. You could make this trip a circle, ie Nice - Waszawa via Italy - Switzerland - Germany as described and on you way back stop at Krakow/Auschwitz. However, I dont know how long you want/have to stay at Warszawa...
If you want to do this with only your 5in10 pass, you'd need to leave early (0645 at Warszawa) to Auschwitz, spend the day there and then go to Krakow (dont know about luggage storage at Oswiecim [the one for Auschwitz] rail station though)...
On your back you could go Krakow - Katowice - Wien, then night train to Milano and back to Ventimiglia and Nice.

Ok, I will manage to stop at Krakow and Auschwitz on my way to Warsaw.
I can get to Warsaw on my 10th day because I am heading to Moscow afterward.
Any others 'must-see' places on my way?
