Hello
I'm planning an Interrail trip before I turn 26 on May 27th (possibly departing London 22nd May) with my boyfriend.

Above are the countries I'd love to visit. I plan to stay in hostels, and the occasional night train.

I wondered if anyone can offer any advice on this as a possible itinerary. Where to start, and end...

Do you think I should do it over a month? or 22 days?

Is there something I'm completely missing out on ?

I'm worried there are too many cities, and not enough nature ?? As I live in a City it would be nice to experience something different..

Any tips relating to this trip - either on trains/itinerary/where to stay/what to pack/must do's and must don'ts, etc. all greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi.

To bring it a bit in a order...
Maybe travel this way:

UK - Bruges - Amsterdam - Berlin - Krakow - Budapest - Zagreb - Rijeka - Ljubljana - Venice - Rome - Bern - Nice - Paris

First of all the schedule planer: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route

UK-Bruges:
https://rail.cc/blog/from-london-to-amsterdam-with-the-dutchflyer/
https://rail.cc/en/london-brussels-bruxelles-eurostar-train/f3988
Use the free IC trains in Belgium, avoid the Thalys trains.

Bruges-Amsterdam:
Again by free IC trains.
https://rail.cc/en/brussels-bruxelles-amsterdam-train/f3994

Amsterdam-Berlin: https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-berlin-train/f2346

Berlin-Krakow: https://rail.cc/en/berlin-krakow-gdansk-night-train/f1407

Krakow-Budapest: https://rail.cc/en/krakow-budapest-night-train/f3305

Budapest-Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/budapest-zagreb-train/f4053

Zagreb-Rijeka: free day trains for example. And then continue by cheap buses. For example the islands of KRK or CRES. Close to Rijeka and a lot of camp sites.
https://rail.cc/en/croatia-bus-connections/f2875

Rijeka-Ljubljana: back via Zagreb. And then by free day train to Ljubljana.
In Slovenia you have a lot of beautiful nature.
Lake Bled, Skocjan caves, ...
https://rail.cc/en/ljubljana-venice-train/f3663

Venice-Rome: https://rail.cc/en/naples-rome-venice-night-train/f1514
Or by day train. Pay attention to the supplements in Italy:
https://rail.cc/en/train-type/italy/it

Bern is a bit out of the route ... but maybe add it now. Rome-Bern, Bern-Nice.

Nice-Paris: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/france/fr

Paris-UK:
https://rail.cc/en/paris-london-eurostar/f1806
https://rail.cc/en/paris-london-ferry-calais-dover/f1442

And if you like our work at the forum, support it and buy your official InterRail pass via [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Delivery within the UK in 24 hours on business days.
Thank you. :)

Wow! This is such a great help, thanks!

There's just a couple of places I'd rather avoid - such as Budapest.. simply because I have been there before. As beautiful as it was, on this trip I'd rather exerience new places.
Can you recommend something to replace it in the itinerary?
As for Croatia - I was hoping it would be a nice place to take a break from the big cities. Do youthink I should consider Greece, or somewhere else to have a nice dip in the water before I carry on with the trip?

Thank you in advance - and of course I can buy the ticket from the site..

I definitely recommend Croatia, as it is on your way.
The islands close to Rijeka - or travel a bit down in direction of Dubrovnik by a cheap bus.

As traveling to Greece is still a long way. Via Belgrade, Sofia, Thessaloniki down to Athens.
From there you have access to the islands. But you will loose a lot of time.
https://rail.cc/en/athens-cyclades-santorini/f2456

Then you could take the free ferry from Patras to Italy:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/athens-to-patras
https://rail.cc/en/ferry-greece-italy-patras-bari-ancona-venice/f1348

To avoid Budapest, maybe do it this way.

Berlin-Prague: https://rail.cc/en/berlin-prague-train/f3361

Prague-Krakow: https://rail.cc/en/prague-krakow-night-train/f4027

Krakow-Vienna: https://rail.cc/en/krakow-vienna-night-train/f1903

Vienna-Zagreb/Rijeka:
https://rail.cc/en/vienna-rijeka-split-night-train/f1908

If you want, have a stop at Lake Balaton in Hungary (it is on the way Budapest-Zagreb).

Other possibilities are stops in the Alps (on your way to Switzerland).

Or from Nice you could travel along the French coast (possible to get out of the train - the rail track is close to the beaches) in direction of Perpignan, there you use the Petit Train Jaune up in the Pyrenees and from there by night train to Paris.

Sounds good ... :)

It is good to have a route, to have some goals you want to travel to.
For example if you love Rome, stay some more days - skip Nice ... or whatever you want.
Get the feeling to be free with your railpass. :)

In general you can calculate 3 days per city - if you don't want to rus trough.

Sorry for all the posts, but I'm finding it so difficult working out the best routes.

How do-able is this? And how many days should I allow ?

Many thanks

Rome - Interlachen - Nice/Southern France - Pyrenees - Paris

Roma: 3-4 days
Interlaken: 1 day, but if you want to visit the surrounding areas you can stay there several days (Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraubahn) - we have an expert on this topic on the forum, TheFratellis is from Interlaken, he can certainly give you good information. :)
Nice/Cote d'Azur: 2 days is enough for a start, but if you want to explore the area a little more plan with 3-4 days
Pyrenées: Tough one...if you are interested in hiking etc, plan several days; if you just want to go by Petit Train Jaune, plan 2 days (ie day 1 Nice - Carcassonne/Toulouse, Day 2 Carcassonne/Toulouse - Latour de Carol - Perpignan and night train to Paris)
Paris: 3-4 days

Connections are good between the cities in this order; the only part where you have to be a little careful is Interlaken - Nice. There's only one direct TGV Genève - Nice during the day, if you dont get a reservation for this train, you have to go via Genève - Lyon - Marseille...have a look at the schedule planner or give me a hint if you need further help.

HI Flo

Thanks for your help. I think based on your info on the Interlaken-Nice route, I would like to change my plans.

Can you recommend an interesting way to complete this trip between Bruges and Paris, which has good connections ? I think I will be travelling with a 10 days in 22 days pass.

Bruges - Amsterdam - Berlin - Prague - Vienna - Zagreb/Rijeka - Ljubljana ........XXXXX..... Paris.

Maybe there's a small misunderstanding here: All other connections run also via Lyon - Marseille just like the direct TGV Genève - Nice does, but you would have to change trains.

About a route...umm...in my opinion you already have a quite nice schedule (esp if you want to go to the beaches in Croatia so I'd recommend taking the direct way from Ljubljana to Paris:
Ljubljana - München by day train and continue with CNL overnight to Paris.
Or, if you want to make a stopover in between, take the night train from Ljubljana to Zürich, spend one or two days in Switzerland (Zürich, Bern, Lausanne, Genève ie) and continue to Paris with TGV.
