Hi there,
Firstly, thanks in advance of any help I might get here. Three friends and I are planning to go interrailing this summer, we're all 18 years old and live in London. We were looking at getting a 15 day continuous ticket as we would like to spend a fortnight away.
The plan is first to fly to Amsterdam from Luton.
Days 1-3, arriving early on day 1, then days 1 and 2 spent in Amsterdam, then on day 3 we travel to Berlin late afternoon or evening?
Days 4-6, obviously arrive in Berlin evening of day 3, but spend days 4 and 5 there and travel to Prague on day 6, again late afternoon.
Days 7-9, again arrive on day 6 late, but days 7 and 8 fully spent in Prague, and on day 9 travel to Vienna late afternoon or evening.
Days 10-12, same situation, days 10 and 11 fully in Vienna and late on day 12 travel to Budapest.
Days 13-15, days 13, 14 and hopefully some of 15 spent in Budapest before flying home to the UK.
With regard to the trains, would an InterRail ticket for 15 days continuous cover everything (are there any supplements)? Is it worth getting night trains for any of these journeys or is it better travelling in the day time? How long are these journeys?
Would this be a good trip? (ie are the cities good choices together as a group?) For the time we have given ourselves is the selection about right?
Are the youth hostels good in these places and are they pricey?
I know I've been very demanding in the questions asked so THANK YOU so much in advance of a reply :D

Hi,
Good news - you don't need a 15-days ticket to make this trip. You only need 5-in-10-days pass. Which is almost 2 times cheaper.
You will need to pay supplements only if you choose to travel with night trains (Amsterdam - Berlin or Prague - Vienna (no supplement for seats in Vienna train)). Night trains are a great way of saving some time for cities. And saving some money, too, at least if you go in coach. If you buy couchettes, their price is comparable to that in hostels.
Hostels should be good in those cities, but you may also find hotels for the same or cheaper price, since they charge for rooms and not for each bed.
Your choice of cities is very good, I think ) Remember that 5-in-10 pass gives you 5 days of travel and your itinerary suggests only 4 - so you can use remaining day for some day excursion - say, from Vienna to Bratislava, or from either Berlin or Prague to Dresden.

... or add Krakow in Poland. :)
Concerning your travel days - even using night trains you can save some of them with this special rule:

Supplements information (you will only need some for night trains - but it is often cheaper than sleeping in a hostel):
