Hi!

When buying a DB train ticket online, can I check the option 'discount card' when I have an ISIC card?
Is it better to buy the ticket in advance or can it easily be purchased on the train (Stuttgart to Freiburg via Karlsruhe)?

Gratefully,
AIli

NO, is not and has never ever been in DE. In a very few other countries perhaps maybe. Plus with ISIC there is so much fraud that it is distrusted very much.
IN DE in some cases there is discount or special fare for long-time seasons in a regional area-never for far away (obviously students will not need to travel that long,), info on that by the uni you go to. PLUS-in case you come to study for longer time: from 1/5 there is likely the new Deutschland Monthly ticket for 49€-valid in ALL of DE also in bustram, in Nahverkehr=regional trains ONLY (NOT IC+ICE) that is an extremely good buy to make weekendtrips etc. Furter details follow.

If you click the discount card box on the DB website it gives a list of the valid cards to choose from so you won't get far. And no you can't buy on the train, if you are found without a ticket you get a big fine. You buy, at the latest, from the machine on the station (or ticket office if there is one). But since your plan involves 2 IC trains you could have saved a decent amount by buying well in advance online .
