Me and a couple of friends are interrailing through france and spain next month and are aiming to spend around 20 euro's a day if possible on everything but the interrail tickets. Looking at youth hostels in france and spain it seems most of them cost between 15 and 20 euros, so we are seriously considering using our tents quite often when we cant find a cheap hostel. However we are concerned about simply setting up camp in a seemingly random place. So i am wondering what the laws are on camping in fields and meadows etc, and also if anyone could give any advise on how to locate a site and go about avoiding trouble?

Thanks for your time

17 days till we go! :D :D

Hi ...
In Spain and France it is not allowed to camp wild or at beaches. I also do not recommend to camp at beaches close to the bigger cities, as it might become a bit dangerous.
If you stop at a small train station, walk somewhere in the nowhere where no one can see you, you won't get troubles. Simply don't leave no rubbish. Sometimes it is also helpful to ask a farmer.

yeah we'd heard that camping on beaches was a bad idea. Thanks for the advice once again :)
