PARIS - PYRENEES - LE PETIT TRAIN JAUNE - BARCELONA

There is one rail connection crossing the Pyrenees: Perpignan - Villefranche de Conflent - Latour de Carol - Puigcerda - Barcelona

You will see a beautiful nature and at the French part of your journey, there is a small yellow train (Le Petit Train Jaune) running from the Mediterranean coast up in the Pyrenees like a rollercoaster - in the summer months there are even some cars without a roof. Definitely worth to travel ! I recommend if possible to use the Petit Train Jaune down from Latour de Carol to Villefranche - it is faster and even more fun. ;)
Traveling with an Rail Pass, this route is free of supplements - even the rollercoaster train.

Attention: the station you will have to change is called in the train schedules Villefranche Vernet les Bains - but the small city is called Villefranche de Conflent. The station is a mix of Villefranche and Vernet les Bains. It is no problem to change the trains, as it is a very small station.

LATOUR DE CAROL - BARCELONA

It is regional train line R3.

 In the summer months you have much more trains running this journey.

Hi,

Am planning to do this trip in April. My question is:

Do I need to buy separate tickets (Paris - Perpignan, then the Yellow Train, then Latour de la Carol to Barcelona) or do I purchase a Paris to Barcelona ticket straight away (overnight, arriving Perpignan in the morning), and buy a separate ticket for the Yellow Train, and then get on the Latour de la Carol to Barcelona using the Paris-Barcelona ticket?

I hope this question makes sense - happy to clarify / make it clearer if it doesn't.

Hi Idlan.
You will have to buy separate tickets. It depends on the route you want to travel.

1: Paris to Latour de Carol by overnight train: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]
2: OR Paris to Perpignan by overnight tain: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]

3: Latour de Carol to Perpignan or reverse direction: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]
Important: buy the TER connection, NOT the one via Toulouse!

4: Latour de Carol to Barcelona: buy it in the train (or at the station, don't know if the is currently a ticket machine available). It is EUR 12 one-way.

I recommend to travel Paris-Perpignan by overnight train. Then up to Latour de Carol and down to Barcelona.

Have a look as well at the blog: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/

Have a nice trip - and if you like, just upload some photos here to railcc of your trip. Thank you.
Peter :)
