Hi, so my group of friends are planning to travel around Europe for a month in July, and this forum has been really useful. We're in the midst of hammering out our itinerary, and could really use some input.

We'll start in Manchester before flying down to Barcelona via Liverpool. Looking at the Barca to Milan route, le Petit Train Jaune seems highly recommended. However, we only have about one day to travel between both cities, as we plan to meet a friend in Milan on a certain date. So it looks like we have two options:

1. Take Spanish regional train to Le tour de Carol and onwards to Villefranche and Perpignan. Then take the Elipsos overnight train to Milan
2. Transfer between various trains stopping in Montpellier, Nice or Ventimiliga to enjoy the French Riveria, and finish with a night train to Milan.

Which offers better value, in regards to scenery and train supplements. Or are we rushing the trip by making it one day?

Next, is it better to take a night train from Milan to Rome which will save some time, or perhaps Milan to Genova to Rome which will have nice Mediterranean views. And finally, getting from Venice to Zurich. I've heard that the Milan to Zurich train goes through great landscapes, but it seems Venice - Munich - Paris is also a logical route. So I guess the question is, would you recommend Switzerland or Germany?

Thanks for any help!

Hi ...

I see, well planed already. :)

Like you said, you only have option 1 or 2.

If you have the money for the Elipsos night train, I recommend you option 1.
I just updated a post and placed some train schedules: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/

Option 2 is of course cheaper... but stressful.

Concerning Milano - Roma.

You have day connections by
1) Eurostar trains
journey time: 3 hours
supplement: EUR 10
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/italy/it

2) IC trains
journey time 6-7 hours
supplement: EUR 3

3) Regional trains
not worth - free but you will need up to 10 hours.

Night train:
there are cheap ones. read here: https://rail.cc/en/milan-rome-naples-night-train/f1513

Hi!

Umm...there is no night train from the Cote d'Azur to Milano.

And take the Venice - Zuerich - Paris route...better connections between Zuerich and Paris than between Munich and Paris (except for the night train) and you'll go via the impressive Gotthard Route. :)

Wish I could give more input but I'm sitting at a lame hostel computer at the moment...
