To the NORDKAPP (North Cape) by train.

A direct travel to the Nordkapp by train is not possible. Most northern railway stations to reach Nordkapp are NARVIK in Norway and ROVANIEMI in Finland.
From there it is still a long way by bus from the most northern railway stations.

From NORWAY:
One way is going by bus from ALTA (Norway) to the NORDKAPP (takes 4-5 hours). To get to ALTA, you also need a bus, starting for example in NARVIK (takes more than a half day).
Arriving by bus from NARVIK, you have to stay normally one night in ALTA.
From ALTA you can use a direct bus to the NORDKAPP, but only in the summer months. Otherwise the buses ends in Honningsvåg, which is about 45 minutes (35 km) away from the NORDKAPP by bus.

From FINLAND:
If you are coming from Finland, use a bus (about 12h of travel and one-way: ~ 90 EUR) in ROVANIEMI and go up to the NORDKAPP.
You can make a stop in IVALO if you like.

 My personal opinion: if you have the time and the money, it is okay to visit the Nordkapp. But after traveling trough peaceful and empty nature you will meet at the Nordkapp hundreds of tourists. The nature you can see during the bus travels is amazing. I recommend to travel this journey one day by own car instead of using the bus. You are free and can enjoy the nature much better, have stops along your trip.

If someone is thinking about going there, i feel responsibility to write here that it's far not obviously worth traveling that much for a rock which claims itself to be the northernmost point of Europe.

I haven't been there but i have many friends who have been, and independently from each other they all say it's not worth. It's more like an artificial sight for conservative travelers, but real travelers don't find it interesting at all, as it is completely similar to any other cliff in Norway. Go to Tromsö instead, that's much nicer.

I plan to travel by bus from Rovaniemi OR Ivola to Nordkapp mid May. The bus company website shows only timetable from 1/6/2011 onwards. Does the bus run this route in May? If not, what is the alternative way to travel to Nordkapp?

Hi!

This is as well the info I have: Direct bus Ivalo - Nordkapp only from June 1.

Apart from this direct bus there are only local buses Honningsvag - Nordkapp starting from May 17. to get to Honnigsvag I can offer you the following:

Ivalo 1625 - 1755 Karasjok :arr: by Eskelisen Lapin Linjat
Karasjok 0515 (Mon - Fri) or 1350 (Mon - Thu) or 1430 (Fri, Sun) - 0845 (Mon - Fri) or 1650 (Mon - Thu) or 1720 (Fri, Sun) Olderfjord :arr: by FFR Veolia
Olderfjord 0845 (Mon - Sat) or 1415 (Sat) or 1650 (Mon - Thu) or 1720 (Fri, Sun) - 1025 (Mon - Sat) or 1555 (Sat) or 1830 (Mon - Thu) or 1900 (Fri, Sun) Honningsvag :arr: by FFR Veolia
Honnigsvag 1100 or 2130 (from May 18), travel time to Nordkapp 45 minutes

If you come from Rovaniemi you have to use the same bus as when going from Ivalo; Rovaniemi departure is then at 1100 (rail station) or 1145 (bus station).
