Hi guys,
I'm portuguese, I'm thinking about interrailing tihs summer, since I couldn't do it last summer. Don't know yet if I'm going alone or with a friend.

I'm planning in doing this route:
Maribor (getting there by plane, good idea??) -> Ljubljana -> Zagreb -> Budapest -> Debrecen -> Kosice -> Bratislava -> Ostrava -> Brno -> Praha -> Wien -> Salzburg -> Innsbruck (then, plane back to Portugal, yeah?)

1) What do you think ahout this route? Are 22 days time enough, or better make it 30?
2) How much money should I be counting to spend?
3) I've been reading some posts here at the forum, and the best way to neither be fixed to a schedule is to book my departure from one city once I got there, right? Is it always needed to book every connection?
4) Which is the better option to spend the night? Hostelling is amazing to know other people and visit places together, isn't it? It it better to book online (lose flexibility this way, right?) or once I get into a town I book some place for some days?
5) Any of you know some interesting places to visit (small local villages would be great to know and visit) between the ones I want to go?

I would be lovely if I could do this route, otherwise I think it would be great as well to include/cut some places you suggest ;D
Hope you can help in this !!
Many thanks,
Cheers from Portugal :D

Hi Gonçalo ...

A really interesting route you have - beside of the main traveler routes. :)

1) Easy to do this journey within 22 days, as you don't have long distances to travel.

2) Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, etc. are really cheap countries. If it is okay for you to sleep in hostel dorms, you will get a night for EUR 10 -
Food is as well cheaper than in Western Europe.

3) nearly all trains you will use are free of supplements. so you won't have to book anything.
have a look at the train schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
and then compare it to the supplements: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

4) If you are traveling alone, the best is to stay in hostels - as like you said: you will meet a lot of other travelers to go out in the evening.
I often do it this way (as most hostels have Internet access): in the evening before leaving a hostel and arriving to a new city, I book my next hostel online via internet - so one night in advance. You are still flexible, but you have your bed for the following night and don't have to walk around the city to find a hostel - loosing time.

5) ... mmmh... maybe Sidude knows some ... :)

Peter :)

Not really much I can add I dont think. If you fancy a change of scenary then Lake Balaton is pretty nice, you could day trip it from Budapest or spend a night. Youre missing out by no seeing more of Slovenia, if you have time check out one of the lakes (Bled is the prettiest, Bohinj is a little less touristy. And bloody cold). Also think about heading to the croatian coast. You could go to one of the main resorts, or try to find a smaller fishing village by taking the bus up and down the coast and camping.

WOW !!! Thanks for the very quick and useful reply guys!

Peter:
I'll try that way for the hosteling reservations !
And about the train connections, most of the times it's just 'get at the station and jump into the train' ?
So maybe 1000/1100 EUR (including hostelling and ticket), right?

Sidude:
Lakes! Yeah, nice places to visit, I'm pretty sure I'll do it.
The Croatian coast sounds great, but is it doable in 22 days with the rest of the trip?

Many thanks both of you 8)
Cheers, Gonçalo

For a 22 days trip, 1000-1100 EUR should be enough including the rail ticket! :)

And yes, in must (at least regional trains) you just jump in. They don't have a lot of supplements in this region. In Croatia the IC trains will be EUR 1, in Slovakia EUR 3, in Slovenia you have ICS trains for which you get a free reservation at the stations (in the train you will have to pay) and in Hungary you pay as well EUR 2,50 for IC trains.
Just check it here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
In the case you have to pay, then it is cheap - but as I said, you will always find free trains in this region!!! :)
