Hey guys,
Me and a friend of mine (both 17) want go interrailing for the first time through a bit of eastern-europe, greece, italy, .. with a 22-days railpass late august and early september 2010
We made up the following scheme:
Brussel
Berlin 3 days
Vienna 1 day
Budapest 2 days
Istanbul 4 days
Athens 2 days
Patras
>ferry (how long?) 1 day??
Bari
Napoli 2 days
Rome 2 days
Brussels
but we have some questions
1. From brussels to berlin, is this one free? We looked it up and we shall travel with an ICE train
2. Are there daytrains from berlin to vienna?
3. From Vienna to Budapest: supplements?
4. We'd like to travel as fast as possible from budapest to istanbul? (is the balkanexpress a good option?)
5. Istanbul-Athens: is there a connection via thessaloniki?
6. Ferry from Greece to Italy, Patras-Bari, how long will this take?
7. Anyone has an idea for maybe another stop between Rome and Brussels?
In our calculation we have five days left so far, any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!!!!!
Ignace

Hi Ignace ...
[b1) ]BRUSSELS-BERLIN:
ICE is free - but keep in mind that you can not travel for free in your country of residence. You will have to buy a discounted ticket until the border station.
https://rail.cc/en/how-to-interrail
2) BERLIN-VIENNA:
Yes you can do this by free day trains:
By free ICE for example to Nürnberg and from there continue to Wien.
Have a look at the train schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route
The night train connection (which will save you as well the money for a night in a hostel) is here: https://rail.cc/en/berlin-vienna-night-train/f3738
3) VIENNA-BUDAPEST:
If you use a direct international train (such as for example the RAILJET): no supplements
If you use a connection with changes in Hungary, you will have to pay a supplement of national IC trains:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/hungary/hu
4) BUDAPEST-ISTANBUL:
Use the schedules planer mentioned above. And have a look at these topics. The shortest way is via Beograd (Serbia):
Budapest-Beograd: https://rail.cc/en/budapest-belgrade-night-train/f3370 , also possible by day train
Beograd-Istanbul: https://rail.cc/en/belgrade-istanbul-night-train/f3567
5) ISTANBUL-THESSALONIKI:
Use the schedule planer + https://rail.cc/en/istanbul-athens-train/f2369
6) PATRAS-BARI:
It is an overnight ferry. Journey time about 18 hours. Have a look at their websites mentioned here:
https://rail.cc/en/ferry-greece-italy-patras-bari-ancona-venice/f1348
7) ROME-BRUSSELS:
Nice stops can be ZÜRICH, FREIBURG, COLOGNE, PARIS ... or via VENICE to LJUBLJANA, ZAGREB. :)
And if you like our forum, support it and buy your official InterRail Pass online via [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] :)
Delivery to Brussels is within 24/48 hours on business days. Thank you.
Peter :)
