hi,
I was just wanting to know what the general thoughts are on what is better to take...
would i be better off taking some cash and then my debit card to take out cash whilst in europe or would it be better to take some cash and then travellers cheques and my card for emergencies?
thanks,

hi!
I always travel with cash only - no debit card, no cheques. :)
Friends of mine never had problems with their debit cards though.

im worried that if i lost my cash or had it stolen then i would have no other form of money, however, i think if its kept safe enough it would be ok. how much cash would you suggest? im going for 22 consecutive days and staying mainly west and middle europe. I plan on pre booking some hostels and maybe taking some night trains, and i dont plan on eating anything other than the basics and maybe a few treats e.g. frogs legs :os so how much would you estimate that would come to? x

I'd calculate between 30 - 40€ per day. I check the prices of accomodation of those places I'm definitely going at home to have a rough overview about accomodation costs (which are a main part). If you are going to take a tent with you you can save a considerable sum of money (but I'd only do that if you do camping at all places you're going - dont lug around a tent for three weeks if you're going to use it only once).
As I've said, I'm traveling with cash only - it's stored in several different parts of my equipment so in case anything gets stolen I still have another depot left. :)

hi...
I always have a mix with me ... cash - debit card - credit card...
and like Flow said: the best is to have it stored in different places.

so do you think travellers cheques is just a waste of time then? i was leaning more towards cash/debit/credit card liek you say as i know some hotels can ask for credit cards just incase, and ill just get money out if i need it via the debit card but i wasnt keen on taking travellers cheques though my boyfriend who im going with was thinking he might so just thought id see what you said...

for me personally it is a waste of time: you will always have to find a bank which is open to get money for your traveller cheques. and to be honest: in the case your credit card gets stolen, you only have to call a service number and your credit card is useless.
Europe isn't more dangerous than crossing London.
