I will be in Bulgaria, and am wanting to travel form Sofia to Rome for a day or two. But extremely foggy on how to go about this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi!

Well...this is quite a distance for traveling by train if you only want to visit rome. However, it's doable of course - and it's a quite interesting way to travel too. :)

You could use the following connection for example:

Sofia 1140 - 1921 Beograd
Beograd 2140 - 0908 Villach
Villach 1056 - 1405 Venezia Mestre
Venezia Mestre 1439 - 1813 Roma

Roma 1145 - 1521 Venezia Mestre
Venezia Mestre 1540 - 1850 Villach
Villach 1925 - 0619 Beograd
Beograd 0750 - 1737 Sofia

The 5in10 IR pass would suit just fine for that route - it is 159€. Attention, you will have to pay additional supplements!

Hope this helps for a first impression - if you have further questions, please ask. :)

A different alternative, covered by the InterRail ticket, is to go to Patras, Greece by train and then ferry to Bari, Italy, and from there to Rome by train. Haven't checked schedules, but it should be faster. Although it breaks your only by train rule :)
