Amsterdam-Berlin-Prague-Krakow-Budapest-Ljubljana-Zagreb-Dubrovnik-Rome

Hi planning to go away with a few friends and was looking at doing something similar to this route but struggling a bit with the details especially after Budapest - the order of cities and whether a ferry from Croatia or going via perhaps Venice would be a better idea - is there any chance you could give some advice? Also perhaps as to the options with regards to day or night trains in and out of Krakow? Was hoping that sticking slightly East would lower costs a bit, is this do-able on a budget?

Thanks.

Hi ...

For night train and other connections simply have a look at the country topics. :)
And use the schedule planer: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route

If you want to stay at the Croatian coast, chose RIJEKA as destination, from there go on by bus. For example to the islands of Cres or Krk.

To cross the border to Italy either use a cheap bus from Rijeka or see here:

Thanks! I'm really interested in fitting Dubrovnik in, although i know it will require a bit of a struggle and need buses, etc. - do you think it is feasible to get from Dubrovnik to Llubljana in one day and therefore save one of the travel days?

I was hoping to go:

Amsterdam-Berlin
Berlin-Prague
Prague-Krakow (night train)
Krakow-Budapest (night train)
Budapest-Zagreb
Zagreb-Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik-Llubljana
Llubljana-Venice
Venice-Rome

on a 10 days in 22 ticket. Do you think this is possible or is it a bit risky?

Hi!

If you want to include Dubrovnik you have two possibilities:

Train to Split and continue with ferry (Jadrolinja is operating one connection on Tuesdays leaving Split at 0700 and a second on Saturdays leaving Split at 0630; times are for the priod Jun 1 - Sep 30).
Or take a bus from Split for example - sorry can't provide details on that. ;) There is also the possibility of going to through Bosnia and Herzogewina to Ploce which is much more closer to Dubrovnik than Split.

There would be a ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari ( https://rail.cc/en/ferry-croatia-italy/f2339 ) but I'm not sure yet what is the better way to go for you,
either Budapest - Zagreb - Dubrovnik - Ljubljana - Venice - Rome
or Budapest - Ljubljana - Zagreb - Dubrovnik - Bari - Venice - Rome
but I think it the second option might be more convenient because esp the Ljubljana - Venice part wouldn't be much fun as you can read here https://rail.cc/en/ljubljana-venice-night-train/f1388 and here https://rail.cc/en/ljubljana-venice-train/f3663 . But then again, going by ferry to Bari and then all the way up to Venice is also quite a trip (although there would be a direct night train Bari - Venice).

To answer your question: If you manage to get to Ploce (from Dubrovnik by bus) early enough there would be the following connection:
Ploce 0620 - 1945 Zagreb
Zagreb 2115 - 2333 Ljubljana
But I wouldn't rely a hundred percent on the connection in Zargeb since the train from Ploce might be delayed - you never know (although you could continue with a later train from Zagreb but then you would arrive in Ljubljana the following day).
If you'd go up to Split you would have to be at 1500 to have the following connection:
Split 1500 - 2042 Zagreb
Zagreb 2115 - 2333 Ljubljana
Again, I can't give you information about buses Dubrovnik - Ploce/Split, sorry.

I hope everything's written moreorless understandable...due to the late hour... ;)
