only EC8 Zurich-Hamburg and EC9 Hamburg-Zurich are planned to have the panorama car. Due to a problem with reservation system the DB usually fails to recognise it but reservation is not compulsory (a 1st class ticket is).

Thanks to all. i indeed read somewhere in the beginning of my exploration about rail passes to actually being able to book. That issue is all done now. One question remains for me: how do I book the right-sided Rhine track onwards, and the other side at the return. I am making a vice-versa trip!

There are regular passenger trains on both sides.

The "linke Rheinstrecke" has regional trains and the EC or IC services (and a couple of ICE which are really covering for IC and do not run at highspeed but still use the ICE tarif). These are the trains that call at Bonn Hbf and run via Bingen to Mainz Hbf. The EC/IC trains cover the whole length from Köln to Mainz, the regional trains run as two services split at Koblenz. North of Koblenz on weekdays is also the RE5 "RheinExpress" service which has fewer stops, the northern end of this service is Wesel close to the Dutch border (it used to serve the boder station at Emmerich). Although branded as an express this is really the same as a NS-Sprinter service in the Netherlands.

On the "rechte Rheinstrecke" the trains are normally just regional, EC/IC may be diverted due to problems or engineering work but usually late at night. Most freight trains also use this line. The route can be spotted in schedules by stops at Flughafen Köln-Bonn and Bonn Beuel (instead of Bonn Hbf). South of Koblenz the it runs via Rüdesheim to Wiesbaden. There is a section through the east side of Koblenz which neither of these services use as they both cross the river to use Koblenz Hbf. The station at Koblenz Ehrenbreitstein (directly below the castle) is only served by a shuttle train service running between Neuwied and Lahnstein.

Travelling by regional train (including RE5) does not require booking of any type, and reservations are not possible. Ordinary tickets are bought from machines or phone App like a tram ticket, but the famous german Regional transport day tickets may offer cheaper options - use of one day of an Interail pass is probably the most expensive way of travelling this route. EC/IC trains do not accept regional tickets, advance booking may give a cheaper price and paying on the day will be a few Euro more expensive. To use EC8 or 9 for the panorama car requires a first class ticket (which can be a first class Interail pass), reservation in the car seems impossible through the DB online system but staff at a DB Reisezentrum might be able to force it - the car number is 263 and it is normally the 2nd car from the north end of the train, when I travelled in it only 2 seats were reserved and it was never more than half full. There is no way of guaranteeing that a reservation will be on the river side of the train.

Thank you MisterSteve and Arend7 for your nearly exhaustive comments on my Rhine valley trip.
Lots to figure out, and make final decisions. Great help of you both!
