Hi,
i'm planning a trip from Rome to Cairo going through Istanbul and onwards.
Roma, Venice, Trieste, Ljubjiana, Budapest, Bucharest, Istanbul - I will continue into Damascus Syria (apparently there's a weekly overnight train). I understand you can only tell me about Europe.
I would also like to include Greece and would like to know which route you think is best - I also do not plan to take overnights unless I really have to. This is a bit of a quest so I have plenty of time and plan many stops and visits along the way.

My intention is to use your Interrail pass but am sure my journey will last longer than a month.

Appreiciate any help you can give.

Thanks

Wayne

Hi Wayne ...
You are planing an interesting route ... send us some experiences you made when arriving in Egypt. :)

For your journeys down to Istanbul, these links might be helpful...

First the - as you will have a lot of stops, check it for your individual wishes:
https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route

Night trains are listed at the country topics of our forum: https://rail.cc/en/countries

Venice-Ljubljana: https://rail.cc/en/venice-ljubljana-train/f3664
Istanbul-Syria: https://rail.cc/en/istanbul-syria-train-toros-express/f1176

Concerning Greece: you can include it, for example from Sofia (Bulgaria) via Thessaloniki to Athens and then back again to Sofia. From there go on to Istanbul.
But to be honest: reaching Thessaloniki and Athens by train is okay (avoid the expensive IC day trains), but to reach smaller places, the bus is much more comfortable in Greece.

Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.

Yes, it is an interesting route isn't it!! I am trying to follow in my own way with some deviation of course the footsteps of the Ancient Romans overland route to Egypt make stops & visits along the way.
I am currently travelling from Brussels down to Bordeaux through Paris - you can take a train straight through avoiding Paris but that would be easy and then I will go back to Amsterdam next week.
I have done a few of these trips around Europe but this is my most challenging & thrilling yet - I got the bug when my flight was cancelled a few years ago from Rome to Palermo & I decided to do an overnight train instead - now If I can I take the train.

So I will set off on the new journey in 2/3 weeks approx & it would be a pleasure to share my experiences with you guys.

I'm still not quite sure about the Interrail pass though is there anyway I can get some type of ticket that lasts longer than a month.

Once again thanks for your help and the links.

Rgds

Hej Wayne ...

Rail travel can become an obsession ... ;)

Concerning your travel trough Eastern Europe down to Istanbul: it might be even cheaper with individual tickets. I listed some fares (no IR) at the topics of the night trains (see country topics).
As there is no InterRail pass lasting longer than 1 month you would need 2 passes then ... it isn't worth for Italy-Istanbul - individual tickets will be cheaper.

Happy to hear your experiences, Peter :)
