Hi, I'm interested in going interrailing next summer but am totally unsure as to how to go about organising a trip and so on. A big concern is the cost of such a trip. Basically, I was wondering if any of you could help me by telling me about your past trips, such as the itineries and also how much your trips cost (a breakdown of each individual cost like train ticket, accomodation etc would be extremely useful if possible). This would help me so much and I'd appreciate any advice :) .

Hi!

At first here is a useful links for first time InterRailers: https://rail.cc/en/first-time-interrail

The different types of tickets and their prices can be found here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-global-pass
Keep in mind that certain trains will require additional supplements/reservation, a list of those can be found here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

In general the amount of money you are going to spend during a trip depends on several things:
- Where are you going: There are some countries (BeNeLux, Germany, UK, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland for instance) where you won't have to pay supplements (with a few exceptions like some night trains) whereas in countries like France, Spain, Italy most long distance trains require a compulsory reservation. However, note there are alternatives to these trains with compulsory reservation almost all the time but they usually are slower.
There are of course places in Europe that are more expensive than others (Western and Northern Europe in general); but even there you can spend some time on a budget.
- Where do you sleep: Hostels will be more expensive than camping; you can save money by using night trains
- What are you going to do: Going out every evening, eating in restaurants etc gets more expensive than buying food in the supermarket and cook by yourself at the campsite or hostel; museums and sights often have reductions for students/young people or even have free entry on certain dates

You see, the costs depend on a variety of things...on my first trip in 2006 (one month) my expenses stayed under 1000€in total (including everything). We stayed at campsites or sometimes in a park or slept on the night train...I think we went to a restaurant three times and cooked by ourselfs the rest of the time.

For planning the itineries of your trip have a look at the schedule planner: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask. If you like the work here at the forum and website, buy your ticket at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] . Thank you. :)
