Hi everyone,
In February/March I'm going to spend some days (7 to 10) in Italy together with a friend of mine. We're planning to buy the IR One-Country-Pass and at the moment, we're thinking about which places would be interesting to visit within this rather short time. Do you think it is worth to visit Sicily? The Etna, Taormina, Palermo, Agrigento? Any other sites that shouldn't be missed? What can you tell me about the train connections in Sicily?
And, by the way, is it complicated to get there? Can we just stay on our seats and the train will be put on the ferry? Are there high supplements?

Another idea: We'd like to visit the Amalfi coast as well. How do we get there? Are there cheap buses? I think there is no train station at the coast...

Thank you in advance!

Hi!

:!: How to get to Sicily by train:

There are several direct trains from mainland Italy to Sicily - they are conveyed by train ferry from Villa San Giovanni to Messina. On those through trains you don't have to pay extra for the ferry!

The direct trains are either E, IC or ICN trains so you will need at least a 3€ reservation for a seat. On the night trains there are couchettes and sleepers available as well which cost around 15-50€ depending on the category.

On sicily you have a rather large network that links the main cities - there are several daily connections between Palermo, Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Agrigento.

Amalfi coast is accesible either from Sorrento or Salerno, from where you have to travel by bus. :arr: For bus services check www.sitabus.it

Thank you so far!

Another question: Is there an Italien ticket corresponding to Interrail? A ticket to travel for free within a periode of time? I've heard that the Italien trains are rather cheap, so maybe there is an even more economical possibility to visit Italy by train...
