ITALY (Venice, Rome, Milan) - Gorizia (Italy) - BUS - Nova Gorica (Slovenia) - SLOVENIA (Ljubljana)
Information for Interrail, Eurail and normal train ticket travellers.

A fast way with several daily connections between Italy and Slovenia is to travel from Italy (Venice, Rome, Milano, ...) to Gorizia, the border city of Italy to Slovenia.
There you have a link by bus to Nova Gorica, the Slovenian border city. It is only 4 km. The bus number is Number 1. The fare about EURO 1,50.
Then continue by train to Ljubljana.

UPDATE: https://rail.cc/en/train/venice-to-ljubljana

:!: For individual train schedules use this link: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route

First search for a connection Italian town (for example Venice/Venezia) to Gorizia (2 hours travel time) - FREE Regional trains frequently available!!
Calculate at least 1 hour for the bus transfer. It will be faster - but you never know if you have bad luck, miss a bus or something else.
Then search for Nova Gorica to Ljubljana - 3 hours of travel time - FREE Regional trains available!!

You won\'t find a lot connections if you use train schedule planers searching for direct connections Venice/Milano/Rome to Ljubljana !!!

Wow, thanks for this post. :)
I'm planning an interrail month long travel this summer, and was surprised to see there is only a night train connection between Venezia and Ljubljana. I google'd the town where I would need to take the bus ride. It looks like a very nice town and I think I will just walk through it and take a latte while I'm there.

There's no rush ;)

--EDIT---

I did a little research on bahn and there's no direct connection from Venezia to Gorizia. I recommend taking a direct train (highspeed if you're lucky) from Venice to Trieste, and from there taking the bus to Ljubljana. The bus ride takes about an hour.

The website for the bus company in Ljubljana is here: www.ap-ljubljana.si/eng/ . Type in 'Trst' as the FROM location.

Hi Lucas.
I have to correct you. There are several direct connections available from Venice to Gorizia by regional trains, FREE of supplements.
Don't use the bahn schedule planer, use this one mentioned here: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Examples:

Venezia Santa Lucia dep: 0718 | Regional train - free of supplements
Gorizia Centrale arr: 1002

Venezia Santa Lucia dep: 1004 | Regional train - free of supplements
Gorizia Centrale arr: 1219

Venezia Santa Lucia dep: 1204 | Regional train - free of supplements
Gorizia Centrale arr: 1419

and so on ...

Peter :)

Aah thanks! I wonder why [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] wouldn't give up the right info.. I will still consider the bus connection from Trieste to Ljubljana as well since it's way faster, as well as taking a ferry between Italy and Croatia, we'll see.

Still a lot of options open, I guess I will decide when I'm in Rome and need to go east. :)

Hi! Actually there's a far more convenient way to travel from Italy to Ljubljana and Zagreb: you could get the night train Rome - Wien and get off in Villach at 4:14, and then at 6:09 you could get the train to Ljubljana, Rejika and Zagreb.
Have nice trips!
