Hi all,

I plan to travel this route by overnight train (D292) early in December. I´m wondering if this route still has delays constantly? And is it safe for one person travelling alone?

Is it better to take a bus, and if so what is the bus timetable?

Cheers,
Ben

Hi!

Sure you mean the 292? That's the Sofia - Beograd train.
Sofia - Budapest is possible with the 490 (1155 - 0504) or the 432/370 (0745 - 0847).

About the delays: I think you still should plan with some extra time on this route, since delays are still possible - sorry if this sound kinda vague but I dont know more exactly.

And about safety: First rule is to keep all your important belongings close to your body while (should apply everywhere, not only in eastern europe ;) ). SiDUDe has more experience traveling in this area, maybe can he help you out further.

Hi!

I dunno about delays constantly - Ive travelled between Belgrade/Sofia/Istanbul/Skopje/Budapest a few times and each time there has been a delay of at least an hour. The line from Budapest to Belgrade is pretty good from what I can remember - its the line between Belgrade and Budapest, especially after Nis that is prone to problems as its single track. Once we met an oncoming train, had to get out, clamber along the embankment (with all our luggage) onto the other train...

I would not try to get a connection within 4/5 hours of arriving in Budapest, just in case. It will be fine travelling alone, ive never had any problems, just be sensible and friendly. There will probably be other travellers who you can talk to.

The bus will probably be more reliable, although more expensive. There is, according to http://www.volanbusz.hu/en/ 2 buses Sofia - Budapest, the fastest takes 12 hours (1000-2200) and costs 11250Ft
