Hi, my boyfriend and I want to have a try at interrailing and need some help devising a route! we have booked time off work - 23 days approx and want to get the 10 days in 22 days flexi interrail pass and have been trying to think of a route but don't really understand how it all works!

We are thinking fly to Berlin - then train from Berlin - Frankfurt - Zurich - the Matterhorn - Florence - Rome - Venice - Vienna - Salzburg and then fly home

my boyfriend definitely wants Rome and Florence and i definitely want Berlin and Vienna!! we are flexible to amend where we want to go but there are some places one of us or both has been too! we did want to go to Paris, Bruge, Amsterdam and possibly Bratislava but know we cant go everywhere in three and a bit weeks!

do you think our above route sounds feasible? can you offer any ideas? also, we are concerned about paying extra for trains when weve already bought the pass - how do we find out about this ... and if trains will be fully booked or not

you can see we are complete novices - any help would be greatly appreciated

Kez and Gareth :)

Hi Kez and Gareth ...

Have a look at this topic which will help already a lot.
You will find the link to train schedules and to the supplements website.
https://rail.cc/en/first-interrail-tour/f3303

You can do this route with the 10 in 22 - should be no problem.
If you want to add some night trains, have a look at the country topics of our forum where the supplements for the different types of cabins are listed.

From Berlin via Frankfurt to Zürich you won't have to pay a supplement using the free German high speed trains called ICE (or slower IC also available).
Maybe skip Frankfurt - it is not very interessting, better to add Freiburg im Breisgau with a lot of students and clubs and bars ...

In Switzerland you have to pay extra for the route up to the Matterhorn (Brig - Zermatt) - but if you just want to cross by and see the Alps without any extras, use the connection by REGIONAL TRAIN (not the Glacier express!) running CHUR via ANDERMATT to BRIG and then continue to Geneve or Lausanne.

In Italy you can always use free Regional trains, as their fast trains always have supplements.

At the end of your tour have a look if it is possible to visit Budapest as well - definitely worth to do. :)

I hope this will help. Peter :)
