Hello Peter!

We are going to travel with the 5 days within 10 days pass. We are planning to travel to London from Athens by airplane (75 euro per person), spend a couple of days there, then arrive to Amsterdam by train, spend another 3-4 days there and finally arrive to Germany also by train.

We want to ask:
a) Can we travel from Germany to Athens with just one ticket? We cannot understand if we have to change trains between the countries and need more than one ticket. It is a 30-hour trip approximately so could you inform us how many tickets are we going to use?
b) Do you think that 600 euro per person is enough for our trip? We want to stay at hostels.
c) What's your opinion about our travel plan which starts from London?
d) We are planning our trip at Christmas season. How many days before we have to book the rooms? Because of the high-season we are afraid of facing complement of passengers at trains. Is there any possibility to happen that?

Thank you very much for your time and patience. We are sorry for our English :os

a) Yes. You'll have to change trains at least twice to get to Thessaloniki, from there you can get further on back to Athens.

b) For a day i'd calculate with approx 35/40 euro, depending on how much how want to spend on accommodation, food, going out etc. Calculate with a little more to be prepared for unexpected situations. ;)

c) It sound quite reasonable and fun; how and when do you intend to make your way back? Because it would be much cheaper if you'd use your IR pass to get back to Greece instead of buying a regular fare ticket. However, that would require two of you days. Your route could then look like this:
:arr: Plane to London, spending a few days there.
:arr: Leaving London on you first IR day, arriving in Amsterdam in the evening
:arr: day 2, 3, 4 in Amsterdam
:arr: day 5 travel to Germany
:arr: day 6, 7, 8 in Germany
:arr: day 9, 10 travel home

Depending on where you stay in Germany you may have to leave on the evening of day 8 with a night train; you have to get the 1850 train from Vienna to Nis on the evening of day 9 to get back home in time.

d) If you intend to stay at a certain hostel I'd book as early as possible. It depends on how many persons are traveling as well. Check availability of hostels a few weeks in advance and you'll see how many space still is available - then you can decide to book or wait.
You will have to pay supplements on certain trains anyway, regardless of high-season. However, space may be limited due to holiday season, so again, if you need to rely on a certain connection it is advisable to get the reservation quite a time in advance.

Hope that helps so far.
