Hi,

I'm planning on purchasing the Eurail pass for 6 or 8 days for 3 countries - France (Paris), Italy (Florence/Rome) , and Spain (Barcelona/Madrid). I'll be on vacation from school for approximately 9 days and plan to use the pass within that week period to travel through all three countries. I'm kind of lost and I was wondering if anyone could offer some tips? I was wondering if I should try to go to Spain first from Paris and then head to Italy? Is that realistic? Any special routes or extra to know about?

- Nadia

Hi.
I think that the best way is to make the longest trip on your 1st day, meaning Paris - Madrid, via Bordeaux. It's a trip of about 11 hours so it would be great if you could find a night connection even this would mean to pay a supliment, but it would save you one day since the 7p.m. rule would aply. You can spend a day or two in Madrid (but if you aren't planning to visit some museums or the zoo, 4-5 hours in Madrid would be enought) and you must visit some of the historical cityes around it, like Segovia or Toledo (but if you have to choose among those two I will recomend Segovia). Then you can go from Madrid to Barcelona. Barcelona it's a prety nice city with many turistic atractions, but i think you can visit it during the day and then taking a night train from Barcelona to Roma (via Nice, and you can make some stops in Genova and Pisa and still arrive to Rome by the evening. Remember that internal routes, such as from Madrid to Barcelona or from Genova to Pisa, Pisa- Rome, Rome - Venezia, Venezia- Torino etc are way easier to find at any hour while the routes like Paris - Madrid, Barcelona - Rome are at a specific given time so it would be less flexibility when you will be travelling from a country to another one.) You can spend a day or two in Rome, then head to Venezi and from there to Torino (via Verona and Milano, where you can make some stops if you'll have the time) and from Torino back to Paris.
