Myself and a friend are planning a trip in either summer 2010 or summer 2011 around Europe with this itinerary:

Amsterdam - Berlin - Warsaw - Prague - Vienna - Budapest - Bucharest - Sofia - Belgrade - Venice - Munich - Paris.

we will be flying from Manchester to Amsterdam at the start of the trip and then back again at the end!

do you think this trip is possible?

if so could you please give me an idea of train surcharges between the different places?

thanks

Dave

Hi Dave ...
If you have 1 month of travel time, this route is really nice... :)
Maybe think about adding Ljubljana - Venice is interesting but very very expensive. Do not stay there for a night.
A cool town full of students with a lot of pubs and so on is Krakow in Poland.
For the supplements: in most cases you can use night trains - it is nearly the same like the price for hostels.
Have a look on the country topics of our forum - there you will find all information you need - information about the city to city connections and the night trains.
Maybe as well interesting for you: https://rail.cc/en/first-interrail-tour/f3303
If you have some special questions about special connections, let me know.
Peter :)

Hey

I've just come back from doing a similar route so i can help you with any info if you need it.

I started in Amsterdam and intended on ending in Amsterdam but things didn't quite work out the way i planned.

The route i took was Amsterdam - Brussels (free Intercity train via s'Hertogenbosch) - Paris (charged a 5euro supplement for reservation) - Rome (overnight train - 25euro) - Venezia/Venice (3euro supplement) - Budapest (overnight 19euro) - Zagreb (free with IR) - Vienna (overnight train via Ljubljana and Salzburg) - Prague (free with IR) - Krakow (free overnight train)

Sadly this is where the journey ended for me as i was gassed and robbed on the overnight train to Krakow and flew home the next day from Krakow. I had another 7days left and had intended to go to Berlin before heading back to Amsterdam.

Hope this helps and if you need any more info feel free to contact me again whenever

Tom

No just me and my cousin. We have been fine throughout the rest of Europe but we were tired during the overnight train from Prague :arr: Krakow and fell asleep. When we woke up we found that our bags were ransacked, but luckily they left our credit card and passport. Which makes me think that they do it a lot and steal all the valuables that cannot be traced back to us.

I've read up on this a lot since i've come back and it's a regular occurrence apparently, especially on the overnight trains into Poland. Don't trust anyone, even if you become friendly with them in the carriage and don't expect to find the security guards on the train helpful because they are often in on it.

The best thing is to probably travel through the day to Poland and make sure you don't fall asleep.

If you need anything else feel free to ask me.
