I am going to Finland next and will use a one country pass 4 days in one month.
I have got a few questions about the reservation system and it's necessary or not and also about the 1900h-night-train-rule.
First part :
I will probably take the following trains:
Friday:
Turku – Jyvaskyla: 1505 - 1836 | train R921
Monday:
Jyvaskyla – Helsinki: 0822 - 1152 | train Intercity IC86
And one of the following night trains:
Helsinki – Rovaniemi: 1926 – 0753 | train R265
or
Helsinki – Rovaniemi: 2221 – 1041 | train R273
Tuesday:
Rovaniemi – Kemi: 1630 - 1746 | train R410
and the night train:
Kemi – Tampere: 2234 - 0548 | train R274
Do I have to make any reservation for any of those trains and pay any supplement (except for the IC86 on the 14/09) as I always put without HST/train with supplement in my search.
Can you explain me how to make the reservation if necessary (at least for the IC86)
Then second part: about the 1900h-rule-for-night-trains:
I am thinking of living Jyvaskyla on the 13/09 late in the evening towards Tampere, for instance with the intercity IC92 leaving 19h32 and arriving 20h53, spend the night there by some friends house and then take a train in the morning 14/09 from Tampere to Helsinki. I wonder if this train IC92 could be counted as a night train and thus would if it could count for the day 14/09 and not the 13/09.
Thanks a lot if you can help with this; I hope you can answer my numerous questions =)

Hi Vinz ...
Let's do it step by step:
11/09
Turku Dep: 1505 (by R921) | FREE of supplements as it is a regional train
Jyvaskyla Arr: 1836
:!: This is ONE travel day.
14/09
Jyvaskyla Dep: 0822 (by IC train) | FREE of supplements like mentioned here in the https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/finland/fi supplements list for Finland
Helsinki Arr: 1152
night train
Helsinki Dep: 1926 | supplements - see link bellow
Rovaniemi Arr: 0753
or
Helsinki Dep: 2221 | supplements - see link bellow
Rovaniemi Arr: 1041
:!: You will need TWO travel days, ONE for the morning train Jyvaskyla to Helsinki, and ONE for the night train Helsinki to Rovaniemi. You can NOT use the rule of the night trains 1900 in reverse!! https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
The supplement for a seat in these night trains is at least EUR 4,60 - for more details: https://rail.cc/en/helsinki-turku-kemi-rovaniemi-night-train/f2948
To book a seat or bed in a night train, either do it at a station in Finland or phone them - number is mentioned at the link for the night train above.
In your case you could get your reservations for all trains already in Turku at the beginning of your tour.
15/09
Rovaniemi Dep: 1630 (by regional train) | FREE | On this connection you use the TRAVEL DAY of the 15th already used for the night train Helsinki-Rovaniemi
Kemi Arr: 1746
night train:
Kemi Dep: 2234 | supplements needed for a seat - see link above for the night trains
Tampere Arr: 0548
:!: This is ONE travel day. ONE for Rovaniemi-Kemi (you use the 15th, already used for the night train Helsinki-Rovaniemi) and then ONE for the night train down to Tampere.
:arr: You have in total FOUR travel days used.
And if you like this help, please order your official InterRail ticket via the webshop [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - you then support this forum and all the work ... thank you!! :)
Have fun, Peter :)

Thanks for your answer!!
there is just something i don't understand:
how is it possible that i use 5 travel days if i only travel the days 11, 14, 15 and 16, whatever the trains i take?
then can you tell me about the second part of my request which was:
about the 19h rule for night trains:
i am thinking of living jyvaskyla on the 13/09 late in the evening towards tampere, for instance with the intercity IC92 leaving 19h32 and arriving 20h53, spend the night there by some friends house and then take a train in the morning 14/09 from tampere to helsinki. I wonder if this train IC92 could be counted as a night train and thus would if it could count for the day 14/09 and not the 13/09.
thanks a lot anyway for your help

because basically the night train from helsinki to rovaniemi 14/09 to 15/09 and the day train rovaniemi to kemi on the 15/09 would count for the same travel day which is the 15/09, isn't it?

Helsinki - Rovaniemi by night train and then during the day to Kemi = ONE travel day.
But you also mentioned on the 14th Jyvaskyla - Helsinki.
So you have TWO, the 14th and the 15th.

TWO travel days, as the rule for night trains only counts for direct night trains - read the rule carefully. The rule is already a special nice goody for InterRail travellers ... you can't make out of 1 day 2 days ... ;)

You are right - it was really confused and bad ordered to understand what you want - just had to mention it... ;)
of course you have 4 travel days then - as you can use the connection Rovaniemi-Kemi on the 15th with the same travel day for the night train - I corrected it at the top.

Ah, i forgot two more questions :?:
1)
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/finland/fi
about the supplements list, you told me my Intercity train would be free, would it also be free for the pendolinos?
2) ABout reservation and supplement:
is a supplement and a reservation the same or not? i mean is it possible to make a reservation for my trains without having to pay a supplement (except for the night trains)
thanks again ;)

Okay ... good to hear ... now it seems to be clear. ;)
Pendolinos are free as well.
And if you have to pay a supplement, the reservation is included - for example in the night trains: you have to pay the supplement, which is at the same time the reservation for your bed or seat.
On IC trains or Pendolinos you CAN MAKE a reservation - free for you to decide.
But in most cases you will get a seat somewhere in a train. I recommend to sit in the first or last wagon of a train, there you normally get a seat. :)
