4 friends and I are planning on travelling this route in early September, with a 5 in 10 day pass and staying 3 nights in Amsterdam before the pass starts and then 3 in Krakow after it finishes. Does this route seem realistic and sensible? Any suggestions or advice? We are planning on getting day trains for all the journeys apart from Budapest- Krakow as the journeys aren't too long, would reservations be compulsory/ recommended on any of these journeys? And if so, from where? Finally, we are planning on catching a night train from Budapest- Krakow which only leaves once a day, from Budapest at 19.58 and arriving in Krakow at 06.33, would it be possible to reserve places on this train anywhere as it is obviously important that we catch it with there only being one train a day.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi ...

A good route with good cities - perfect for a 5 in 10 ... :)

1st travel day, Amsterdam - Berlin: https://rail.cc/en/train/amsterdam-to-berlin
It is free of supplements. use the free ICE train.

2nd travel day, Berlin - Prague: https://rail.cc/en/train/berlin-to-prague
As well free of supplements by day train.

3rd travel day, Prague - Vienna: on this route you will travel by EC train which has a supplement of EUR 7.
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/czech-republic/cz

4th travel day, Vienna - Budapest: use the direct trains with no changes in Hungary - for example the Railjet.
These day trains are free of supplements. If you use a connection with changes in Hungary, you have to pay an IC supplement:

5th travel day, Budapest - Krakow: https://rail.cc/en/train/budapest-to-krakow
Use the couchette for less than EUR 10 per person ...

:arr: You can book all supplements for day and night trains in Amsterdam main station or at least in Berlin main station.

I hope all this will help you and if you all want to support this forum and project, buy your official InterRail ticket via [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Better to support all this work here than an anonymous company.
Delivery of the tickets is by secure mail and 24/48-hours express delivery on business days. Thank you. :)

Have fun, Peter :)

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, it was really helpful. We'll probably book the Amsterdam- Berlin and Budapest- Krakow trains when we're in Amsterdam then, I assume by the main station you mean Amsterdam Centraal.

yes exactly ... the Amsterdam Centraal station.
normally you will get a 6 person compartment in the night trains so you are together - but often it is better to mention it, that you want to stay in the same compartment. :)
