i've been told that its advisable to photocopy documents before i go travelling around europe, which documents would i need to photocopy and should i leave a copy at home too? help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Have a copy of your bankcard and passport with you. That's enough. Also good to have one copy at home ...
So in case something get stolen, you simply have to fax (or go) to your embassy at the country you are and easy get a new passport.
