Back in (gasp!) 1982, I was Eurailing with my dad. We left Interlaken, heading for (we thought!) Zurich, but we read the timetable incorrectly and ended up heading towards Domodossola. My (now quite vague) recollection was that we were sitting in the train as it passed through some spectacular scenery with amazing galleries cut into the sides of cliffs, and crossing over bridges. On the table were pamphlets about (I think!) the St Bernard Pass and I said to my Dad that it's a pity we weren't on that route - and then I realised that we were on the wrong train and were in fact on the route on the pamphlets.

I'm planning a trip to Switzerland with my family in December and I'd like to take them on the same route, or something equally spectacular. We'll be in Bern before the trip and it had seemed to me it should be simple to find the route. But it isn't!

Sooo - my question is - does anyone have any idea what route I was on? And if not, any suggestions from Bern south to Italy? We are aiming to get to Florence OR to Venice (haven't worked that out yet so suggestions for spectacular routes to either would be great!)

Many thanks to you all!

Hi,
the The Albula and Bernina railway lines are imo the most beautiful and spectacular tripps. It is now a UNESCO world heritage.
see: http://www.rhb.ch/Home.1094.0.html?&L=4
But you arent on that trip.

go on http://www.sbb.ch and check Interlaken - Domodossola. There are different route. Some goes through the Gotthard massiv, there is the Simplon pass, or the San. Bernhard pass. Perhaps you can remember some citys, so you will see on witch tripp you were.

sorry for my english, I am Swiss ;)
