Hi,
I'm swiss and planning to go from Sofia to Istambul but I only have my ID card.. The ambassade in Switzerland told me there was no problem but to be sure: did a swiss-traveller allready passed the border with only his ID card? (or if somebody just knows it would be helpful :P )
Thanks!

Hi,
I did travel with a passport, and at the customs office, I saw only passports with my fellow travelers, the majority of them being EU-residents. You need to get an entry stamp and a visa to get across the border with Bulgaria (by the way, make shure you have money with you, the visa is 15 euro and you have to buy it at a small trainstation at the border, no ATM, and they don't take credit cards). I gott a passport because I couldn't find the enough information on the website of our Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It stated that an IDcard whas sufficient for Turkey, but also that I would need a passport to travel to Turkey over land. So I hope the people at the embassy didn't think you were flying to Turkey, in wich case an IDcard will do. I don't know your route, but for Serbia and Croatia you do need a passport.
I hope someone else might be able to tell you more.

I (Germany) also always entered with a passport -as well as you need one when travelling from Budapest to Sofia crossing Serbia (you will get a stamp in your passport) ...
but the official says (at least for Germans): you can also enter with an IDcard.
