Hi everyone,

I'm a young female solo traveller interrailing around Eastern Europe this August 22nd to 12th September. A friend is joining me half way but before then I plan to visit Slovenia (Ljubljana and Bled), Prague, Krakow and Budapest. I've started planning my itinery and for now I plan to stick to it. I'm planning to take some night trains to save time and money but am a bit worried about safety. I'm sure many people have posted concerns about travelling alone on night trains but I just wanted extra reassurance...

A pretty comprehensive, solid guide book said to avoid night trains, especially those between connecting Krakow with Prague and Budapest (which are the exact night trains I intend to take) since theft is 'rampant' and there are ''scams in which groups of thieves pass canisters of sleeping gas beneath the doors of train compartments, travellers pass out and wake to discover they have been robbed''. This all sounds pretty extreme and gave me a bit of a shock when I read it. Has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) on these train routes or could give me some general advice? I know I'm already more vunerable since I'm a woman and I'm travelling alone.

Many thanks in advance, any advice appreciated!!
Niki

There are certain routes that are a little notorious, HOWEVER, I have never had any problems whatesoever. What you can do is ask for an all female compartment, and also make sure that it is always locked. If it is locked from the inside, it cannot be locked from the outside, even by the conductor so you should be pretty safe
