Hi just wondering if you are allowed to set-up a tent anywhere e.g. a park etc, or is this illegal in some European countries?

hi ...
it is illegal ... even on beaches ... close to big cities I recommend not to camp somewhere, I can become dangerous and maybe you get robbed.
you can find camp sites for EUR 10 per night and you are save. for big cities it is often much easier and cheaper to sleep in hostels ( [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] ) - as you save the money and time for public transports to the camp site which are often far away from the city centre.
in Scandinavia it is allowed to camp in the wilderness, 200 metres away from houses.
what I do: I jump on a regional train, just leaving the big cities for 20-30 minutes... and when it gets green and I see small villages and meadows, I spontaneously jump out of the train, leave the small villages and just sleep somewhere in the meadows. never had any problems. much nicer than in a dark, dirty park somewhere in a city where it is not allowed.
even met some nice farmers in the morning, talking and getting fresh milk. :)

use REGIONAL TRAINS ... small trains, slow trains, not the high-speed ones ... these of course do not stop in small villages.
but REGIONAL trains which you will always find a big stations are the ones you need to get a free place to sleep.
