Hi, my friend and I plan to travel together next summer. Hes from the States and I live in Germany. Our rough itinerary :

Amsterdam
Paris
Belgium
Barcelona
Basel
Berlin

I checked out the interrail site and was slightly confused. It stated that the ticket cannot be used in the country of residence. So, that means I canĀ“t use mine within Germany, right? What about from Germany to Amsterdam or from Amsterdam or other countries back to Germany? Can I use it? Thank you very much in advance!

Yup, it isn't valid in Germany. You will get a 50% discount on the journey from your hometown to the border and back though (As long as this journey is within the validity of you IR pass).

Since your friend is from the US he'll need a EURail ticket which is quite similar to the InterRail pass.
