Don't rent a car.
Taking the tube is way more practicable...and probably cheaper if you get yourselfs an Oyster Card or a Travelcard.
Best way to explore the city is of course going by foot, using the tube for transfers between different parts of town since the interesting stuff is far more spread than for example in Paris.

The Tube is a fantastic network there's always maps everywhere of the routes and stations and you can always find someone to help you if you get stuck.
Oyster cards (use on public transport) are brilliant and there is a daily capping limit of something like £3.30 GBP for use on tube, buses some overground rail services.
This is the Transport for London website:: https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do
You will find route planners, Tube maps, prices/tickets and how to obtain a Oyster Card etc etc

Dont get a car in london. There really is no point, good tube network, good bus network, and if you get yourself an oyster card not too bad value either
