This might seem obvious but I'm very confused in need of help.
When you make reservations and pay supplements for certain trains, can you do this online or should you do this at a train station?
If you do this at a station, do you speak to someone behind a counter and would they be able to speak English?
Finally, can you make reservations and pay the extra fee a day or two before travel for me to get on the train, or should this be done much in advance?
I hear that in Italy you need to make reservations constantly to travel, and as Italy is main part of my trip I am getting a little worried.
I appreciate any help you guys can offer me!
Thanks!

You have to make reservations at a station you cant do it online at the moment.
Most should have someone that speaks English as i am aware.
I think the price of reservation/supplements stays the same no matter when you buy it but of course the later you leave it the more risk you have of not being able to get on the train....

yeah in italy there will more than likely be someone with a bit of english, elsewhere maybe not. Some German/French can be useful.

Thanks guys.
From your experience, how much in advance have you made reservations ?
And were they easy to do (just a case of turning up at a station and saying you wanna get on this train to where and when?)?

mostly pretty easy. If you avoid obviously busy routes (eg Italy - France on a Friday evening in the summer) you shouldnt have a problem reserving a couple of days in advance

Sorry, to bump this - but was wondering...
What about reservations across different countries - i.e. needing a reservation on one French service, and then one on an Italian service - is it possible to do this at one station?

Technically yes, but it depends on how nice the guy at the desk is feeling - sometimes he/she will say no
