Hello,
I am trying to find a route from Milano to Ljubljana without supplements and I used the option without HST/trains with surcharge, so I found this connection:
Milano Lambrate
Padova
Villach Hbf
Ljubljana
It takes 12 hours with 2 prolonged stops :( , anyway, it includes a EuroNight and the site says EuroNight
Subject to compulsory reservation, 2nd class only seated accommodation, Global price, Sleeping-car, Couchettes. Does this mean I have to pay supplements although I used the without HST/trains with surcharge option?
Btw, any ideas on how to get to Ljubljana from Milan?
Thanks!

Yup, you need to pay a supplement (4-5€ for a seat) on the mentioned night train.
Alternatives:
Two sensible connections (with a ~5€ supplement though):
Milano 1130 - 1443 Venezia
Venezia 1600 - 1913 Villach :arr: supplement payable
Villach 1927 - 2108 Ljubljana
or
Milano 1733 - 2038 Venezia
Venezia 2132 - 0141 Ljubljana :arr: supplement payable; check if your hostel has 24h check in
The Italy - Slovenia border crossing is only served by the Venezia - Budapest night train (the one you'd be traveling on the 2nd connection); if you want to go without supplements you could try to make your way to Trieste and cross the border by bus. In Sezana you could take a train to Ljubljana then. But I don't think that this will be cheaper than the 5€ supplement for one of the above connections.
Similar situation at the Italy - Austria border...only one day train, two night trains and two bus connections all requiring a supplement.
The only possible connection with regional trains I could think of would be Milano - Verona - Fortezza - Innichen - Lienz - Villach - Ljubljana but you probably won't make it in a day...
