I never had bad feelings walking around there. For me it was like other south European countries... :)

Yeah, walking around even slightly dodgy areas of Zagreb and night was fine for us

I had been in northern croatia and istria 1998 for almost four weeks, 2001 for three weeks and 2005 for one week.
I NEVER had any problems (expect in a soccer game 1998 during the soccer championship-some croatian kids had not been too fair ;) )!
Even in 1998, two years after the war( a time, when there was almost no tourism), people had been very friendly, helpful and kind.
I think nowadays croatia had almost become as safe as Italy. Of course you can see this in the prices and fews too :(

Anyway, I recommend you Istria, especially the south east coast and the islands Cres, as well as mali and veli(?)losinj

Have a nice stay.
I am sure you will!
Cheers

First of all, when I was in Croatia I never felt unsafe. We stayed in Pula and in Porec and we never had any problems and never felt uneasy walking arount at night time.

I also have to add, we were in Croatia in June. One day my boyfriend went swimming and forgot he had his wallet in the pocket of is swim trunks! Obviously he lost it. BUT! Last week, 4 months after he lost it, we get a letter containing his wallet! It has travelled from Croatia to Sweden over 4 months and everything is still there! So croatians seem to be honest people :P
