natwest say they will calculate the cost of the withdrawal using their 'prevailing exchange rate' (among other charges which are more transparent). What does this mean, will i get a really crap exchange rate? Has anyone used a pre-paid travel card type thing and if so how did they find it?

Thanks very much for any advice

Get a Nationwide card, they don't charge for virtually all countries in Europe and the exchange rates are better than the ones you get in travel agents. I'd guess Natwest would have a similar system for calculating the exchange rate, but as I don't have an account with them I couldn't tell you for sure.

We've just applied for one of the pre-loaded travel money cards, the Caxtonfx Mastercard (affilliated with the Newcastle Building Society) seems to be the cheapest one in terms of fees, and it's free - you have to pay a 10 quid deposit but that becomes part of your balance. We've never used them before but it appeals to us because you can keep your travel money seperate from you current account, and the withdrawal and transaction fees seem to be cheaper than our debit card. Money Supermarket is pretty good for comparisons.
