i'm looking forward to going interrailing with my girlfriend. however, she seems a bit nervous about the prospect of dorms in the hostels. are her concerns justified? thanks :)

hi ...
it is everywhere the same in the world - if you show your big laptop, all your money, your ipod and so on, then someone might be interested in it.
nearly all hostels have individual lockers.
I personally never had problems... :)

Me and my boyfriend are going in July and we've been chatting to friends and family who've travelled before.

The best bits of advice we've had are...
- Don't stand on train platforms looking lost, as opportunists will see that you are lost and pick on you. Try and get somewhere less obvious before deciding you're unsure what you're doing next.
- As soon as possible, go into a local shop and buy something, and make sure you get a carrier bag. Nothing makes you blend in more than a carrier bag! ;)
- Don't put anything you have of value in easy to reach places or on show. Buy pouches you can wear inside your clothing, which you can put money, passports and your interrail ticket in. Never leave these things unattended.
- Make copies of your important documents and keep them separately, but again somewhere not obvious.. the bottom of your rucksack might be a good idea.
- Finally... if you're going out and not taking your luggage with you, make sure you use a locker... or take a flexible bike lock you can wrap around the bags and your beds. You can really make it hard for someone to pinch your stuff if they have to fight with a bike lock first, and can't actually walk off with your bag.

These are just things to do which will help give you peace of mind. Generally you wont have any problems...

Most importantly

HAVE FUN! :P

Do they have lockers in the night trains?

no ... fix it with a bicycle locker, talk to the other travelers in your compartment and lock the door ... I never got stolen anything during all the journeys I had in night trains (and this was a lot...) ... :)
