Hi all,
I'm a first-time interrailler and hoping to travel for 2 weeks in September with a friend on a Flexi 5 in 10 day rail pass. Our route is Paris-Zurich-Rome-Venice-Vienna-Prague. We're planning on flying into Paris from Dublin and spending a few days in Paris before we start and then a few days in Prague when the rail pass expires before flying home to Dublin from there. Is this route do-able?
I'd also like to visit Nice and Monaco but I'm not sure if we can fit this in anywhere! :S I can't get my head around how long each journey will take and I'm finding it very confusing trying to find time tables online. I don't want all my time taken up on trains.
Are the trains on my route mostly direct, with/without supplements, etc?
Also, can anyone advise of safety on sleeping trains? I am not too keen on sharing with strangers, getting robbed, etc. Does this happen often? Do sleepers tend to work out cheaper than a nights accommodation?
Any hostel suggestions for my destinations?
Can anyone advise of any particular places of interest (apart from the obvious ones!) along the route? Anywhere in particular good for going out at night? Any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

I think it's doable if you do as you've said and spend a few days before and after your ticket is valid in Paris respectively Prague.
For online train information look here:

for general information about supplements and reservations look here:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
as you are going to use a flexi pass you might be able to use the 1900 rule, infos here:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
There are direct connections between the cities in the order you mentioned them as well as connection where you'll have to change trains. If you want to go fast you'll have to pay supplements on most of the routes; on night trains there's always a supplement payable.
If you take good care of your belongings night trains are safe normally.
The more comfortable you want to travel on a night train the more expensive it gets - sleepers are quite expensive but most comfortable, couchettes are about the same price as a hostel, a seat is the cheapest way, depending on the train and day it can be more or less comfortable but however you save a lot of time going by night train.
I don't think it's sensible to go to other places in addition to the above mentioned because you don't want to visit the cities train stations only? ;)
Thus I think you should choose between Zurich and Nice/Cannes.
Wombat's is a very nice hostel in Vienna.

Thanks so much for the info. ;)
I might remove Zurich from my route and replace with Nice. I am finding hostels in Zurich quite expensive! :|
Is there any way to travel from Nice to Rome overnight using only one day of my rail pass? How much would I be expected to pay for a couchette? :?:
