Hi, My friend and I are deciding to visit eastern Europe for just over 3 weeks in total.
We have booked initial flights to Krakow, Poland, and want to ideally end up in Greece at Athens. We were thinking of going either though Slovakia to get to Austria, then to Slovenia, on to Croatia, Bosnia then we were stuck - how is the best way to get to Greece from here?

Can anyone advise us on a good/better route to take? and how long train durations are between these destinations? You'd be a big help, thanks.
Katie

From Bosnia to Greece? The adventurous way would be accross Albania, although this will take time, and a fair bit of flexibility and planning on the go. You can get a bus to the border from most places in Montenegro (which is easy to get to with a Bus from Mostar in Bosnia) Then I think you get a taxi accross the border, then another bus towards Tirana, and onwards towards the greek border.

Otherwise you have to go via Serbia. Either you go to Belgrade from Bosnia (bus) and then get a train down to Thessaloniki, or (if you have time, and the way I would do it) would be to have some time in Monetenegro, there is a daily sleeper train from Bar to Skopje in Macedonia, spend some time in Macedonia and then there are about 3 trains a day down to thessaloniki.

From Thessaloniki there are trains to Athens.

Thanks
Any idea which interrail ticket you'd advise buying for the trip?
Or should we purchase tickets as we go at each train station..

hmm - its a difficult one, buying point to point tickets might be cheaper but there is no easy way of finding out online. You need to think about how many trains you will be taking and how many busses.
