Mobile Phone Costs in Europe

What is the best thing to do, apart from not using your phone, to cut costs for mobiles in Europe?

Anyone has previous experiance with Roaming Sims or buying sims in individual contries?

If i bought a sim in say spain and then used it all around europe would that be cheaper than using a uk sim?
