...from Berlin. Please!

I had planned to get a train from Berlin to Barcelona via Bern but my plans have changed by a day and this has mucked things up; I was going to be leaving Berlin on Friday the 5th but my plans have been put back a day by a missed connection in Sofia so now I will leave Berlin on the 6th of June, a Saturday - as far as I can see Berlin to Barcelona via Bern doesn't run at the weekends, so I need help.

Another problem is I need to be in Porto by the time my pass runs out on the 10th of June. I am open to suggestions as to where to go from Vienna although my girlfriend would very much like to go to Berlin and we would both like to avoid having to go through Paris at all - I have seen on the bahn website that transfers/connections in Paris make our trip possible but we really would rather not go through through there again... this is half the reason we plan to fly to London from Porto. Leaving for Barcelona on the weekday service on the 8th might be possible but this could/will seem to make getting to Porto impossible given that leaving on the 8th gets to Barca on the 9th, a night there brings us to the 10th. Is the pass valid on the day of expiration?

My (already revised) plans are (were!) to leave Rome on the 3rd on an over night train, spend all day in Vienna on the 4th and catch another sleeper to Berlin that night (4th) arriving in Berlin on the 5th and leaving on the 6th. However, now I see there is no Barcelona service via Bern I am in a pickle.

As I say, open to suggestions on a route although many changes are a problem for us, a sleeper supplement or two aren't.

Thank you so much if anyone can help,

Max (and Maurita)

OK then. We have to make up a route from Rome to Porto via Vienna, Berlin and Barcelona, starting on the 3rd, finishing on the 10th, right?
You have a continuous global pass I guess; btw your ticket is valid til 2400 on the expiration date, ie if you have started with a 10 day ticket on the 10th, it is valid from 0000 on this day until 2400 on the 19th.

Rome 3rd - Vienna 4th:

As you've already said, go with the EN 234:
Rome 1910 - Vienna 0842

Vienna 4th - Berlin 5th:

The mentioned night train is the D 202:
Vienna - Berlin 0917

Alternatively you could go via Hannover (ie if the other train would be full already) by EN 490 and ICE 841:
Vienna 1954 - Hannover 0613
Hannover 0631 - Berlin 0820

Berlin 6th - Barcelona 7th (Same connection is possible on the 7th to the 8th too):

Berlin 2222 - Basel 0755; CNL 1258
Basel 0803 - Biel 0910; IC 1612
Biel 0919 - Geneve 1046; IC 512
Geneve 1117 - Montpellier 1457; TGV 6816
Montpellier 1509 - Barcelona 1959; TALGO 70

Since the connection time in Basel is very tough considering you're coming from a night train (and those tend to be late at the terminus) you might feel more safe by going this way to Basel:
Berlin 1850 - Köln 2309; ICE 552
Köln 2353 - Basel 0547; ICE 0609

Also, there would be an alternative connection from Montpellier to Barcelona in case you'd miss the Talgo.

Barcelona 9th - Porto 10th:

Barcelona 1830 - Madrid 2108; AVE 3180
Madrid 2230 - Porrino 0704; HOT 851
Porrino 0807 - Porto 0955; R 12220

Hope this helps for the moment. :)

Ace, that's helpful, thanks... I have two more questions following on from that; doest this mean if my pass has printed on it the 10th as the expiration date I can't travel with it on the 10th at all? Also, do you have any idea which trains have couchettes and how much they or seat reservations night cost?

Thanks again,

Max
