Hi,

I am travelling for only 17 days (on a 5 in 10 ticket), with 3 days in the first place and 4 days in the final place. Final place will definately be Chamonix, but I would happily change my start line and/or order if it means for a better route.

Rome
Ljubljana
Budapest
Vienna
Somewhere in North Italy perhaps or Switzerland
Chamonix

I was hoping for this route, but have no idea if it is unrealistic or not, given i only have 5 days travel....so any input would be appreciated, cheers!

I would do the route as follows:

Rome 1910 - Vienna 0824
Vienna - Budapest (There are trains every two hours)
Budapest 0605 - Ljubljana 1518 (change in Zagreb)
Ljubljana 20.48 - Milano 0825 (change in Villach; Milano is just a suggestion, you could jump off in Verona, Peschiera del Garda (Garda Lake), Brescia, or change trains in Milano to another city in Lombardia or Piemont.
Milano 07.25 - Chamonix 12.33 (change in Brig; Martigny, Martigny - Chamnoix is operated by private TMR in cooperation with SNCF, you will have to pay for a ticket Martigny - Le Châtelard-Frontière, with the InterRail reduction of 50% it costs 8.70€. I suppose that you can use your InterRail ticket from Le Châtelard-Frontière to Chamonix as the french part of the railway is operated by the SNCF.

There are supplements to pay for the Rome - Vienna night train, the Budapest - Zagreb IC, both night trains Ljubljana - Villach and Villach - Milano as well as for the CIS Milano - Brig.

Hope this helps you.
