Hi
Just wondering if anyone knows of the best route from Croatia to Budapest, Hungary??
Me and my boyfriend will be in the south of Croatia exploring the islands, and had then planned on going to Budapest via Sarajevo. We looked in the Lonely Planet book and it says that there was a train leaving Ploce (Croatia) at 4.20pm then going to Mostar 5.56pm, then Sarajevo 8.32pm and arriving in Budapest at 8.48am.
However, we have looked on the Route planner and cant find any route like this!
Ideally we would like an overnight train (saves paying for a hostel!)
We have heard that Bosnia is beautiful and that this particular route was extremely scenic which is why we didn't want to travel north to Zagreb and then get to Budapest from there.
Any advice is appreciated!!!
Thanks

There has been such a night train but it was withdrawn probably in the end of 2006.
Now there's only a day train from Sarajevo to Budapest, leaving Sarajevo at 07.02, arrving in Budapest at 18.14.
There would be another (faster) day connection via Zagreb but unfortunately the train from Sarajevo arrives at the same time the train to Budapest leaves... :(
There are two connections overnight, but they are around 18 hours travel time (one with changing trains in Zagreb at 7am, the other with changing trains twice, in Doboj at midnight at in Stara Pazova at 6am).

The information that I have at the moment is there is one train a day ploce - sarajevo - zagreb that leave ploce at about 6am, arriving around 8 pm in zagreb. There is also a daily overnight train Sarajevo - Zagreb, leaving at about 9pm, arriving around 7am. There is a daily day train Sarajevo - Budapest. However, these are all likely to change and be very fluid. What edition Lonley planet did you find that in? The best advice I can give is not to plan anything, and see what happens when you get there. Its perfectly possible that there will be no international trains into or out of Bosnia...
Youre right, it is a beautiful place. The section of train from Mostar to Sarajevo particularly so. I highly recommend stopping off in both of these places.

edit - too slow! i think were saying the same thing though...
