Me and my brother are planning a trip from the north of the UK, across to Norway then through Sweden and across to Finland, we were then planning on going to St. Petersburg... I am 20 and my brother is 19, which is the cheapest way to complete this trip?

hi Nick ...
first you have to leave the UK - as you can not travel for free in your country of residence which is in your case the UK.
either do it by one of the well known cheap airlines or use for example a ferry: Harwich to the Netherlands https://rail.cc/en/interrail-ferry/harwich-hoek-van-holland/17
from there go up step by step ... keep in mind that you have to pay supplements https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation on some trains - but you can ALWAYS avoid them !
train schedules with free connections are here: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
also have a look at the country topics here at the forum where you will find a lot of useful information, for example about the night trains...
from Sweden to Finland you can use a free bus connection https://rail.cc/en/interrail/kemi-to-lulea - as there isn't a rail connection any more.
I hope this will help you, Peter :)
