Hi Interrailers!

We're looking to head to Croatia this September, for a couple of weeks holiday. Ideally we would prefer to see some of Europe on the way there (and back) so would rather go by rail / ferry than plane. So a few questions...

How easy would this be?
How expensive might it be?
Would there be any point in getting a 20 day Interrail ticket if we wouldn't be using it for the main (middle) section of the holiday in Croatia?
Any recommended routes or places to stop?
What is the chance of a hire car in Croatia to go from Split - Dubrovnik (or the other way)?
Would a sailing trip down the coast be an option? Prices?

We know this isn't all related to Interrail but any advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

okay... then let's plan at least the way TO Croatia... ;)
if you want to do this by InterRail (10 travel days in 22 days), you have a good deal.

possible routes on your way to Croatia are (I suppose your are form the UK... right??):

1) UK ( https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route ) to Paris
then to Munich - Vienna - Budapest - Zagreb - Croatian beaches

2) UK to Netherlands by ferry https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route - night train to Vienna and like above

3) UK - Paris - Southern France (Nice) - via Italy to Venice - Ljubljana - Zagreb - Croatian beaches

you see ... there are a lot of different ways. for supplements on night trains have a look at the country topics here at the forum . for train schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
and for supplements (in case you need them): https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

O.K, thank you very much Peter. So we could go from Paris - Zagreb by Interrail yes? And we could do this there and back on an Interrail pass (say 20 days). Could we go there and back different routes, maybe stopping for a day (and night) in a few cities along the way there and back?

yes of course you can travel by InterRail from Paris to Zagreb. just use the links I gave you. use the train schedules website I mentioned above! :)

and yes, you can travel on different routes - like for example the ones I mentioned. :)
have some stops in the cities... as you have 10 travel days free to chose during the validity (22 days) of your ticket. just fill in your ticket one travel day when you need it. you are flexible and free.
of course you can travel as well other routes... if you want via Stockholm, Barcelona, Berlin, .... you are free - that's InterRail :)

the coastal roads are very high up & poor quaility, ie scarey as hell. buses, trains hot & sweaty + you have to go through bosnia border control to get to dubrovnik!. upper inland roads are newly built, wide & very fast E65/A1 down to zadar/split. best way to move around is by boat i think. excellent frequent system & very cheap too. ljublyana is a 3hr train to rijeka. then overnight ferry to split. or for example zadar area to island of pag (local tourists & big party), split to island of hvar (jet setish but adorable) then island hop your way down to dubrovnik.. tip of the day the costal stretch between brela & baska voda is amazing if you want to relax with no tourists.

Hello, I'm from Croatia so maybe I can help u with few info's...
About routes to Zagreb, I think that the best (and the fastest) way is to go form Munich (via Ljubljana), it's direct train, journey lasts about 6 hours. (If u want to see Vienna and Budapest, you should plan a longer trip, 'couse they're beautifull cities and u can spend several days in each of them... ;) )
And when going back (or vice versa) u can go as suggested via Venice and southern France.

When arrived in Croatia, train won't be much of help, because there is no rail strictly on the coast. Only if u wan't to get from Zagreb to split, than it's usefull to take ICN Zagreb - Split, duration of the trip is 5 hours and u have to suplement 2-3 euro for reservation (if u make reservation a day in advance, you'll get a free meal on train which is only a sandwich, unfortunatelly :D )...
But the highways and motorways (E65/A1 as mentioned here before) are recently build and bus is not a bad option to travel through Croatia. For example, bus from Zagreb to Zadar (something less than 300km )costs about 17-18 euro, lasts about 3 h. Along the cost, there is regional road going on from Rijeka to Dubrovnik, and goes through all major cities on the coast. It can be crowdy during the summer period but if you consider it as a sightseeing, you won't be dissapointed! These roads can be described as scarey as hell as sweden986 see it :) but if you won't drive by yourself, who cares! :D
Boats and ferries are very good, especially if u need connection between coast and islands (main company www.jadrolinija.hr/), not so usefull when needed trip along the cost (exept Rijeka - Dubrovnik which stops in Zadar and Split). It's cheap also (about 6 euro from Split to island of Hvar, e.g.).
So, mine recommandation would be, get somehow to Zadar and then travel by coast all the way down to Dubrovnik (e.g. Zadar - Sibenik - Primosten - Split - Island of Hvar - Island of Mljet - Dubrovnik - and back via Makarska).
If u have more question, just ask and be free to send me a PM!
Cheers!

Further to this query.

I hope to get to Novalja for a few days from Zagreb and then need to get down to Dubrovnik - what is the best route? Bus to Novalja and bus from Novalja to Dubronvik - what are the likely costs?
