Hey,

What is the best way to protect your rucksack in the nighttrains. I will travel alone, so if I sleep nobody will look after my bag.
Are their any methods to protect it??
I don't know if it matters, but I will take these nighttrains: Utrecht-Basel, Basel-Rome, Rome-Munchen. The others trains are over days, so that doesn't matter. Then I can look after my bag for myself :((

Have a nice evening :P

if your in a couchette you will be able to lock the compartment from the inside. Get talking to whoever else is in the compartment to try and get to know them a bit. Put valubles under your pillow. I never used a lock or anything, it makes it look like you have something to steal.

Yes, that's true..
And depending on your couchette-mates you decide what to do? I mean, if they sound like they steal everything they can as soon as you sleep then you will take other measures, I guess??

when using a sleeping car I do it the same way like SiDUDe. on normal seated coaches, I use a little light weight bicycle locker. never got stolen anything. and the important things in such a case is in my socks or shoes... yeah ... it tastes well then! :o

Hi :)

What about my valuables during a stay in the city?? Is it necessary to take all the valueables whith me while visiting a city (especially in the evening ) or is it possible to leave some of them (for example the ticket, camera, some money...) in the hostel. Of course it depends on the hostel and wheter there is a possiblity to lock the stuff there or not. But would you say its good to lock the railticket in the hostellockers?... Cause i don't want to carry all the important stuff when i'm drunken....^^...or always look after the ticket while sightseeing...???

Thx XD

Ian my partner is insisting we get a 'pacsafe' (for those who don't know, a wire mesh 'bag' and locking device that prevents stealing and slashing of rucksacks) but they are quite expensive so I hope it will be worth it and not attract more attention to our bags :| Still I suppose better safe than sorry!

You can either go that route, or go the other way completly and get a cheap bag, not lock it at all an make it look like there is nothing worth stealing. Locking it away makes it obvious there is something valuable inside.

Pacsafes are a waste of money imo

Generally I'd regard traveling with CNL as safe. In the CNL sleeperettes the luggage racks are in the middle of the coach and the seats are facing them so you can always check if someone tries to steal something from your backpack.
If you're entering the train at its origin station you can put the backpack at the end of the luggage rack so that one had to remove the luggage first in order to get to your backpack.

Keep personal belongings with you (pass, money, ticket etc). :)
