is it completely necessary to pre-book hostels online, as i want to have the safety of knowing i will have a bed, but want to avoid a rigid route. also, is the interrail hostel reservation site reliable and good value? thanks a lot

you always have to find the best way between staying flexible but also getting a good and cheap hostel.
in the summer months, I recommend to book some hostels in advance - for the big cities, if you want to stay for two, three or more nights.
if you only spent one night in such a big city, you can also sleep in a poor hostel... and in most cases you will find a place in a dorm there...
so find the best personal mix for you ... :)

mmh... it depends... it is always a good deal to ask that you want to see your room before you pay for it. normally this is no problem.
