Night Trains - Traveling Alone

Hey

I have seen prices for various night trains in Europe.
As I am traveling alone, would it mean that I would only be able to buy supplements for a 1 person compartment?.
Would I be able to simply pay for 1 couchette out of 6 and then other people will pay for the other couchettes?
Or would I have to pay for each bed/couchette in the compartment?
